5.5% of Australian tradies list a phone number that contradicts their own website

Short answer

5.5% of Australian trade businesses — 1,139 of 20,703 — list a public phone number that contradicts the number on their own website. 44.3% match, and the remainder could not be checked because one side or the other publishes no number.

This is a deliberately narrow measurement. It excludes businesses with no phone number and businesses we could not check. It counts only cases where a public listing gives one number and the business's own website gives a different one.

Why it happens

Usually a stale listing, or call tracking used to measure which advertising works. Both are harmless. The third explanation is a lead-generation service sitting between the customer and the tradesperson — you ring, a broker answers, and your job is sold to whoever buys it.

That last case is legal and not always bad, but the cost of buying your job is inside the quote, and you are not choosing who turns up. Most people ringing a number in a directory do not think that is what they are doing.
